Child Care and Community Outreach

Volunteering with children is the most rewarding and exciting experience for every volunteer. Volunteers work alongside with existing staff to take care of orphanages. Being a child care volunteer in the orphanage home, your work involves feeding and dressing the kids and keeping them active. Care takers and local staff assist volunteers in their daily work to help manage the orphanage home in a way that they deem it fit. As a volunteer, you can also assist in the office if you feel you can contribute to organizing things more. Volunteers also have the opportunity to design teaching programs for the kids and help in improving their knowledge and understanding by teaching them in play way methods. As a volunteer at the orphanage home, your duties depend on the placement and individual skills.

As a volunteer, you get to experience the local culture, enjoy free cultural drumming or dancing lessons which we offer to our volunteers. Working in the orphanage home as a volunteer, all they need from you is love and attention, fun and jokes to always put e smiles on their faces.

Most volunteers, who work at the orphanage home, also choose to combine it with the teaching program, so that they work in the school project during the morning hours and go back to the orphanage in the afternoon, and our host families are so lovely and caring families.

Goals of this Project

How You can Help

Volunteers play an essential role in helping disadvantaged children through this program. Participants will spend their time taking care of children and assisting the local team as needed. Volunteers on this program will assist with a variety of tasks dedicated to the wellbeing of children and can rest assured that their help is making a huge impact on these wonderful children. The work usually undertaken by volunteers in this program entails organizing play, assisting with arts and crafts, and helping with meals, hygiene and HIV/AIDS education. At the children’s center, volunteers will be working on schedules alongside local staff. As this program involves working closely with children at risk, a two-week minimum commitment is required to participate.

Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways to this program and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

Teaching and Community Development

On this essential education program, volunteers are placed in a school in Ghana which has high levels of staff shortages as a result of limited funding and inadequate resourcing. These schools are also usually attended by orphaned and underprivileged children. For these reasons, volunteer teachers in Ghana are desperately needed here. The teaching which volunteers in Ghana undertake varies and can cover one or more of a wide range of academic subjects, as well as practical vocational skills.

These skills help students to improve their career prospects. Volunteers play an invaluable role in teaching children and supporting their educational needs, helping them to increase their chances of higher levels of education, and thus the chance for future employment and a brighter future. Volunteers can plan and teach lessons in subjects including English, Math, Science, Physical Education, Health, HIV awareness and any other subjects that the volunteer has knowledge and interest in. Volunteers can also plan fun activities and sports programs for recess times and after schools. As a volunteer in this project you will have the opportunity to try different roles and projects, depending on your interests and abilities.

These volunteer opportunities do not require specialized skills (although these would be an advantage), and we accept volunteers for short and long-term placements, throughout the year. Volunteers certainly get an incredible life experience from participating in our placement program. Upon arrival, most volunteers test all projects before selecting the tasks that suit them best. The first days of their placement will be orientation and adjustment to Ghanaian culture. After this initial period, your placement work will begin. The type of work you are involved in will depend on your interests, skills, level of experience, as well as your comfort level. Youth sports lessons are in high demand and volunteers with coaching or athletics skills are welcome!

Goals of this Project:

  1. Provide English language skills and teach other subjects to vulnerable children in Tamale
  2. Teach and interact with marginalized children in Africa
  3. Improve the future prospects of this impoverished children, and help them to break the poverty cycle
  4. Expose volunteers and children to different people and cultures

How You Can Help

Volunteers play an important role in helping improve the education of the impoverished children in Ghana. They will give back by sharing their knowledge and helping children achieve their goals, while also gaining the chance to learn so much about the children and our Ghanaian way of life. As well as helping by teaching the curriculum, volunteers will also assist at some schools with the development of sustainable projects such as gardens, farming and water sanitation projects.

Volunteers are more than welcome to help with these or develop their own projects along with local staff and students. Volunteers will be assigned to the schools that need volunteers the most at the time of their placement. This promises to be a very beneficial program for both volunteers and the wonderful children in the school.

Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

  1. Teaching English and other subjects to children attending the school
  2. Assisting teachers and volunteers in classes
  3. Teach subjects the volunteer has an interest in (i.e. sport, music, art)
  4. Create games in English for the students and spend time playing with students
  5. Help on sustainability-related projects, or the ones volunteers devise

How You Can Help

Volunteers will find this to be an extremely rewarding medical placement, working to their skill level. Qualified medical personnel may work directly with patients and perform emergency duties; they might work in surgery settings or patient support areas. Medical students, pre-med students and those considering a career in health care are certain to find the volunteer experience extremely helpful in solidifying their chosen careers.

Doctor shadowing is another possibility. Health or medical volunteers in Ghana with no medical training will be asked to help patients and visitors in waiting rooms, the pharmacy and the in-patient areas. These volunteers also perform a valuable role assisting staff with daily office tasks, which may include manning the phones, filing, running errands, carrying out reception duties and data inputting. Regardless of their role, volunteers will find they learn a huge amount about healthcare in an African nation setting and gain valuable medical and life experience.

Volunteers will contribute in several ways to this program and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

  • Assist with day-to-day medical care, as appropriate for experience and training
  • Assist with administration and running the facility
  • Network with program staff and medical staff
  • Midwifery and Maternity

This essential program places volunteer’s right where help is needed. Participants can experience a new country and culture, while also gaining first-hand experience and developing useful skills within their field. Internships are available within local hospitals and will be arranged based on the students’ skills and experience.

Once onsite, interns can expect to be working alongside local medical personnel and will have the opportunity to shadow and observe their work. Hospital staff will be supervising the interns at all times and will be providing on-going support and assistance. Although this is not a hands-on position, interns will be involved in births and will have the opportunity to learn a great deal from these experiences. In some cases, it may be possible for interns to have a more active role, but this will be dependent on their experience and the relationship they have built with the local staff. Hands-on responsibilities will be given to those who have proven they are ready and competent.

    Goals of this Project:

    1. Provide essential maternity care in Ghana
    2. Provide volunteer labour in busy under-resourced hospitals
    3. Provide interns with valuable knowledge and experience in maternity care.
    4. Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both locals and international volunteers alike.

    How You Can Help

Volunteers will find this program to be hugely beneficial – for themselves and to the hospitals they support. Interns will be working alongside local doctors, absorbing knowledge and supporting where their skills allow, providing essential additional assistance for hospitals who are short of staff. There will be many opportunities to witness procedures; and due to this developing Ghana’s health needs especially in this remote communities, interns may come across health issues rarely, if ever, seen in developed nations’ health care systems. Participating volunteers will find that overseas internships are a great way of enhancing CV’s and employers generally regard this highly when recruiting. Volunteers who wish to partake in this exciting program will need advanced English language skills, and need to provide documentation confirming their involvement in a medical related degree. Interns are also required to submit their CV and a letter of motivation which must be presented in English.

Volunteers will contribute in several ways to this program and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

    1. Shadow doctors and staff
    2. Support staff with medical and administration functions
    3. Provide care and support to patients as their training and experience allows
    4. Dental Care, Nurse and Hospital Care

For volunteers studying or practicing dentistry, this program offers a unique opportunity to learn and assist those who need it most in Ghana. Majority of Ghanaians are simply unable to afford dentistry, to the t detriment of their health.

This amazing program puts dentistry care into impoverished communities to ensure it’s getting to those who need it most. Volunteers should have completed at least one year of dental school (to observe only), while those with two or more years of study can access practical work opportunities at the discretion of partners. Qualified dental volunteers can apply for a temporary license to actively practice. This volunteering program is a perfect learning occasion for students or those thinking about a career in dentistry, giving them wonderful observation and support experience. Ghana is such a peaceful, beautiful, amazing place to visit with volunteers having the opportunity to soak up the friendly Ghanaian beautiful culture.

      Goals of this Project:

      1. Improve the dental health prospects of the people of northern region
      2. Provide quality dental care to the people served by this project
      3. Provide an opportunity for students to learn and observe
      4. To create a better cultural understanding between all participants

      How You Can Help

With an over-burdened medical system, volunteers are greatly needed to help provide quality dental care to the people of Ghana. Volunteers on this program provide support to staff to meet the daily workload and improve patient care. Volunteers will help in health care centers, communities and schools. They will assist with dental health education by working within communities alongside locally trained dentists and dental hygienists to conduct workshops and provide basic services and care. The types of care provided includes dental examinations, diagnosis, tooth extraction, filling, cleaning, fluoride applications and oral health education. Ideal volunteers for this program include: dental students, dental assistants, dental hygienists and dentists. Dental students will only be able to observe but professionals, once registered with the Dental Council of Ghana, will be able to do practical work. Registration takes between 3 and 12 weeks. Volunteers will find a placement on this program to be an extremely beneficial addition to both their dentistry careers and their life experience.

Volunteers contribute in many ways and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

      1. Assist dentistry staff in the treatment of patients
      2. Assist with conducting workshops
      3. Interact with patients and provide support
      4. Assist with administrative duties where required

      Women and Girls Empowerment

In most traditions in Africa, the girl child is presumed to be the weaker sex and she must always be submissive to the male counterparts. Most of the girls are not allowed to go to school and are ordered by their parents to stay home and trained to become housewives, prone to early marriages, denied access to school and viable to early pregnancies. This tradition is unfortunately widespread in Ghana, especially in the rural areas where the female child is deemed socially inferior to the male child and are not allowed to express themselves among the males. With this project, the organization aims at building their confidence, provide them with education and develop their leadership skills.

Majority of women in remote or rural communities faces great deal of social inequalities that lowers their self-esteem, an aspect that this project is bent on alleviating through providing education to improve their English and practical skills. This aims at developing their leadership skills and improve their self-esteem.

As organization, we also have skills training centers set up where majority of these women and young girls who want to learn a skill is given the opportunity to do so. This project does not require previous teaching experience to participate since the local team will help the volunteer with lesson planning and topic formulation. However, volunteers for this project should be compassionate, have a good knowledge of the English language and can communicate well with adolescent girls and women. By being there to offer care and compassion, volunteers are making a huge impact on the lives of these wonderful teenage girls and young mothers and assisting care givers and staff.

      Goals of this Project:

      1. Provide essential care and support to vulnerable young women
      2. Improve the future prospects of abused and disadvantaged women through
      3. education and self-employment and income generating skills
      4. Give vulnerable women quality care, compassion and a sense of hope
      5. Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both locals and international volunteers alike.

      How you can help

Volunteers on this program play an essential role in empowering vulnerable women and helping them and their families to achieve a better life. Volunteers will see first-hand the huge difference they can make in vulnerable women’s lives, i.e. by teaching them skills such as reading, how to speak English, and basic life skills. Another major benefit is teaching income generating skills to women so they can participate in economic activities, earn their own money and gain independence, something most women in western society take for granted.

Having sufficient knowledge of English, to effectively communicate will be an advantage for the volunteer, and will be extremely beneficial for the girls and young women on the program. This program gives volunteers the opportunity to have true impact on women in real need. Volunteers will gain much from this experience, and will give the women a sense of hope for a brighter future.

Volunteers will contribute in several ways to this program and can expect to undertake the following tasks:

      1. Educate the adolescent girls on how to handle body men’s anatomy, hormones, Puberty, and menstrual cycles.
      2. Educate the women and adolescent girls in sex education, health and hygiene good practices
      3. Train women and girls on how to defend themselves from sexual predators and unprotected pregnancy
      4. Be a friend and role model to the women and girls for purposes of sharing experiences and skills
      5. Attending to and interacting with the young girls and knowing the life of adolescent girls
      6. Working on awareness programs for abused girls and women
      7. Working on self-employment skill development programs for abused women and adolescent girls

      Agriculture and Environment

Agriculture contributes 54 % to Ghana's GDP, and accounts for over 40 % of export earnings, while at the same time provides over 90 % of the food needs of the country. Ghana's agriculture, which is predominantly smallholder, traditional, and rain-fed- has been declining due to poor agricultural practices and bad weather resulting from global warming. This project therefore aims at introducing modern methods of agriculture to our farmers that will improve their productivity in terms of quality and quantity. These methods, which includes irrigation, use of bio pesticides and sustainable cultivation practices, are environmentally friendly and good at complementing the unreliable weather facing farmers in Ghana.

Volunteers will assist the community folks to overcome the tough economic conditions inhibiting their rural livelihoods. . Volunteers will be expected to work in the organic fields and live with local farmers and their families. Participants will find that they will be busy working in organic fields, growing food crops. They will also provide support to farmers engaged in the field of animal husbandry. This will equip volunteers with valuable learning experience of Ghana’s animal husbandry, and farming methods; and the opportunity to also transfer their knowledge and skills to these communities. Those volunteers who can bring new ideas and farming methods to the villages can help greatly in an area where only basic farming methods are used. By supplying free labour, participants on this program are supporting these villagers – allowing farmers to increase production and earn enough money to support their families. This promises to be a wonderful experience for volunteers to learn about the Ghanaian way of farming, working and living among its friendly villagers and absorbing its rich culture – all while helping to keep families together.

Volunteers on this project will also be under the guidance of local project coordinators / agriculturalists therefore past experience and skills are of an advantage, but it is not a must. They will be working closely with local farmers in fields. Volunteer get involved teaching language class in the morning and cultivation in the field after noon or in the evening. We will have flexible working days from Monday to Friday and weekends are left free to explore local tourist sites.

      Goals of this Project:

      1. Help to keep rural families and villages together
      2. Increase food production
      3. Teach locals new ideas and farming methods
      4. Expose volunteers and locals alike to different people and cultures

      How You Can Help

The mission of this amazing program is to keep rural families and villages together. Volunteers will assist the villagers to overcome the tough economic conditions, inhibiting their rural livelihoods. Volunteers will be expected to work in the organic fields and live like local farmers and their families. Participants will find they will be busy working in organic fields, growing vegetables and food crops. They will also be supporting animal husbandry. Volunteers will gain valuable experience learning animal husbandry and farming methods in Ghana.

Those volunteers who can bring new ideas and farming methods to the villages can help greatly in an area where only basic farming methods are used. By supplying free labour, participants on this program are supporting these villagers – allowing farmers to increase production and earn enough money to support their families. This promises to be a wonderful experience for volunteers to learn about the real Ghana, working and living among its friendly villagers and absorbing its rich culture – all while helping to keep families together.

      Sports Volunteering

Are you someone who is bursting with energy and has a knack for sports and games? On top of that, do you also love working with people and want to learn about their culture? In that case, you’re the perfect match to volunteer with us. Sport is a great means to unite people and promote physical activity through fun and games. It’s healthy, a great stress reliever and a wonderful way to balance energy levels.

Volunteers on this project work with young children and older Ghanaians to help develop their interest in a range of sports and increase their skill base. In addition to the physical benefits of sports education, this project helps in developing the mental discipline of the children, as well as heightening their alertness and coordination. The Sports Teaching project will generally involve physical training, teaching the children how to work as a team, bringing the best out in the players, and encouraging children to have more self-confidence.

Football/soccer is a popular sport in Ghana; however volunteers are also encouraged to introduce new sports to the children. To teach these sports, volunteers may need to bring equipment from home, as there is a chance it may not be available for purchase in Ghana. Volunteers do not need any previous teaching experience to participate in the Sports Education project, however it is important to note that volunteers may be required to teach other classes during their project, such as: Math, English, Science or Social Studies (Geography and History) as sports is usually taught in the afternoon and early evening. Sedarvp Ghana works with our girls football Academy and the boy’s football academy as well.

The main aims of this program are the following:

      1. Improve the future prospects of disadvantaged children
      2. Improve health and social issues by engaging youths in physical activity
      3. Provide insight into the special importance of a healthy lifestyle, increase confidence, teach teamwork and other skills that will benefit children
      4. Create intercultural understanding where both local children and international sports volunteers in the programs can learn from each other
      5. gain practical work experience while teaching children.
